Reflective Synopsis

The following reflective synopsis will converse about some of the many technologies students will deal with in the classroom. In the course of Managing E-learning, I was faced with different ICT’s that can be incorporated into the classrooms. The ICT’s can support and enhance the learning of all students.

I have selected the following four tools for the following learning purposes:

Images

In class we looked at uploading images to our blogs, I also checked out flikr.com which is a fantastic website. Flikr.com allowed me to upload many images that supported the lesson plans I was teaching. Images can be used regularly in the classroom. Images can be used to describe a certain topic or accompany an audio story. Images are simply pictures. Images are used in many ICT’s, from sharing photo albums online (facebook, myspace etc.), to help tell a story. Images are also used in everyday life of the students in my classroom. If I drew a golden/yellow ‘M’, every student in my class knows that the golden/ yellow ‘M’ represents McDonalds. Images are very important for students who are visual learners as this helps them grasp the concept of the particular learning much easily. Images can be used to consolidate and refine information by the following example, images can be used when a set of instructions are told, some students still may not know what they are intended to do, but with the help of an image students will then be able to copy or imitate what they are required to do.

Video- Windows Movie Maker

In class we also looked at using video in the classroom. As my teaching areas are Health and Physical Education (HPE) and English, I already have an understanding of how I will be able to incorporate the tool of video into a classroom. . In HPE students can benefit in using video to analyse specific body movements of athletes. Video allows the students to ‘stop, pause and rewind’ video’s to fully break down the specific movement. The video could also allow them to know exactly what they are doing wrong when they hit the ball or when they take off from the blocks running. Video can also be used in an English classroom. Students can film themselves presenting a short story or a dramatic oral. The students will also get the chance to edit their videos.

The students can use access/gain information in HPE and English, where students can record certain topic or activities, then go home and edit or review what they have done in class to broaden their information on that topic. There are many other uses for video but this just some of the benefits students could gain from using video in their classroom situations. Video allows students to present knowledge to an audience especially in English when they video themselves and the video is used as an assessment piece where other classmates can view the video and the teacher can mark them on their performance, also their editing skills.

Voki

A Voki is simply a talking voice character. The animated characters or avatars enable users to express themselves on the web with a voice, but as a talking character. People can customize their Voki to look like themselves or take on the identity of lots of other types of characters like animals, monsters, anime etc. Voki also allows the user to use their own voice by adding their voice with a microphone, upload or by phone.

Voki’s can be used in the classroom to engage students in their learning. In the classroom students can create avatars that are similar in looks or personalities and record a message that tells a little about them. Voki’s can also be used when exchanging with e-pals with their own country or across the world. Another great way students can use Voki’s is for English Second Language (ESL) students can use the speaking avatars to practice and listen to their own speech. The students may use the computerised voice first and then use their own voice when they feel more comfortable. Writing, reading and pronunciation are all practised and perfected.

Teacher’s can also use Voki’s in the classroom to introduce a new topic to the class. Voki’s can be beneficial for the students that are visual or audible learners, but it would also benefit the whole classroom as this is a new tool that would engage the students to the learning. Another example of using Voki’s in the classroom could be, while the teacher is setting up a new activity for the students the Voki could be explaining the instructions about the lesson/activity about to unfold.

Prezi

Prezi’s are a great tool to use in the classroom. Prezi’s are similar to the powerpoint but are more interactive. Prezi allows people to create dynamic presentations, where you can zoom in and out across a large poster. Prezi also allows the user to create motion paths, add text, embed images and video files. Whilst browsing through the Prezi site I came across some useful Prezi presentations that would benefit students in both my teaching areas of HPE and English. There were Prezi’s about Shakespeare and different learning concepts like characterisation etc. Prezi’s would engage all types of learners in the classroom especially the visual learners. Prezi can be used in the classroom for presentation, introducing new vocabulary and concepts. Prezi can also be used by students in the classroom for story boarding.

This course, Managing E-learning has allowed me to expand my experience with many ICT’s. I had already had some experience with ICT’s and this helped me with the other concepts we learnt, by having this prior knowledge. The new tools/ICT’s I have learnt will allow me to include in my classroom/s and to provide for my learners a much more fun, exciting and engaging learning environment for the students.

Google Earth and Maps

Google Earth and Maps is such a fantastic tool, it would be very useful for the History and Geography teachers out there. But I have also come up with a way it could be useful for English teachers out there. There are some tools on the google Earth and Maps that allow you to follow the trail that some of the greatest authors' and their characters took in the novels. These novels are Shakespeare's movies/plays Macbeth and also a great novel "The Great Gatsby". You simply put the characters name in for example Nick Carraway's walk (The Great Gatsby), into google maps and when it has downloaded you are presented with a highlighted trail of where he walked. This is very impressive and can give the students a great insight into the novel they are reading.

Images may be two-dimensional (e.g. a photograph) or three dimensional (e.g. a statue). They are typically produced by optical devices—such as a cameras, mirrors, lenses, telescopes, microscopes, etc. and natural objects and phenomena, such as the human eye or water surfaces.

The word image is also used in the broader sense of any two-dimensional figure or illustration, e.g. a map, a graph, a pie chart, an abstract painting, etc. In this wider sense, images can also be produced manually (by drawing, painting, carving, etc.), by computer graphics technology, or a combination of the two (see pseudo-photograph).


Images are a great way to spice up a lesson. Students have different ways of learning, and the visual learners will really benefit in a lesson if their are images, pictures, videos anything visual.

Powerpoint

Powerpoints seem so ancient to me and are probably the most overused tool on a computer apart from word documents and internet. There are students in prep and grade one that can create their own powerpoints. Powerpoints are a great way of produing or showing information about a particular topic. They are also used widely, for students to present their assignment, if that was an oral or a written piece it makes the performance more engaging. Powerpoints in the classroom really enhance the lesson making it less boring and more intriguing.

Video

In class the other week, I learnt how to make a video/video picture story in windows movie maker. I found it quite easy using this tool (maybe because I have prior knowledge from a different program). Everything was basically labeled and easy to understand. I believe students who are doing a technology subject at school would benefit from learning this tool. On one of my school pracs a year eight English class used this tool to present their orals. The year eight students had no problem using the program and enjoyed the experience a lot. So therefore perhaps any subject area could benefit from this program, even science where students could film a flower or vegetable growing for an assignment, then use the program to forward the process.

Podcast

A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. Podcast is generally associated with the "iPod." I would use podcasts in my classroom as they are a fun, new and exiting way of doing orals. Students could go home and record their orals into a podcast and then present that for the class. The only negative thing about using podcast for the reason of presenting an oral, would be that students do not get a chance to stand up in front of their peer. So to fix this negative point I would only allow students to learn podcasts during/ for a technology subject. This would widen their technology skills. Podcasts really are a neat and exciting tool that all students would advantage from.

Cybersmart

The other day our class was shown a website created by the government called cybersmart.gov.au.
I found this website very to be a very educational site for any grade students. It provides all types of gadgets that students could play around with. Students would be having fun and learning all at the same time. This would also be useful for parents trying to find a way that is not boring in explaining the different types of dangers, students are faced within every day life. I would definitely use this website in class when teaching students the dangers and risks associated with the internet, mobiles and other types of technology.

Prezi's are a great tool if you understand and know how to work/use it. This particular tool took me a while to understand how to use it and I still didn't work out how to save it so that other people could view it. The finish product however is incredible it would make a boring topic exciting with the way it zooms in and out everywhere. However there is also a downfall about it, it can sometimes cause motion sickness. I would recommend teachers using this tool in their classroom as it is a new, fun way of presenting information.

Mutiple Intelligence Result

The following picture is of my results from the Multiple Intelligence Test from the website http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks1/ict/multiple_int/what.cfm. The test was very similar to the Learning Styles test and I have got basically the same results.
From this graph it shows that I will have to work on my logical, musical and visual/spatial intelligence to ensure that I am teaching to all the students in a classroom.

Learning Style


After completing the Learning Styles test from the website http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/, keeping in mind that all the results were out of a score of 20, my results are as follows:

Solitary 12
Logical 6


I had no idea I was such a social person, that enjoyed sports, being a loner and liked to talk. My results are such a variety on the given spectrum.


The second image is my results compared to other users with the same details as myself. It was quite interesting to know how really unique, everyone is in the world.

I will have to work on my poorer results, so that I am teaching to all students in my class with different learning styles.

First Blog

Hello,
I am Starleigh, I am currently a student at CQUni. I am studying to become a Secondary School teacher majoring in HPE and ENG. I am in my second year, so only two more years to go (yay).
I will be using this blog as part of a course I am doing (Managing E-Learning) to explore and reflect on the methodologies of "e-learning".
